FA Cup: Kompany-Man City reunion

Burnley

Manchester City will meet Burnley in the 2022/2023 FA Cup Quarterfinals. This will be a special match for Vincent Kompany.

City and Burnley advanced to the last eight of the tournament after eliminating their opponents. City won 3-0 at home to Bristol City followed by Burnley’s dramatic 1-0 win over Fletwood this morning.

From the results of the draw, City will meet Burley at the Etihad Stadium, Saturday (18/2/2023) to fight for tickets to Wembley. This duel feels special for both teams because of one figure, Vincent Kompany.

Yes, the Burnley manager was a former captain and City’s mainstay defender during his playing days. This will be the first time Kompany will face Citizens after leaving in 2019.

“Honestly, mixed feelings (regarding the FA Cup quarter-final draw). I am so synonymous with that club and will continue to be like that. My children will definitely have a hard time choosing on match day, but we are really looking forward to it,” Kompany was quoted as saying Irish Examiner.

“However, we have a few important matches first in the Championship, but for sure the match will be a special day. I think this will be a valuable experience for the players and they will definitely be looking forward to facing that match.”

Kompany has been Burnley manager since the start of this season. Despite his lack of experience, Kompany was able to push The Clarets to the top of the Championship with 76 points from 34 matches, 12 points ahead of Sheffield United in second place.

Burnley is the second club Kompany has coached after two years in charge of Anderlecht. Kompany is a City legend with four Premier League titles and two FA Cups.

He even had a statue made in front of the Etihad Stadium, along with Sergio Aguero.

“I’m calm about that game. I know there were a lot of celebrations while there, because we are so ambitious to win everything. We focus first on the Championship games and then focus on the game against City.”
