US travel ban for unvaccinated Djokovic: Letter to President Biden

The discussion about the participation of the unvaccinated tennis star Novak Djokovic in the Masters 1000 tournament in Miami is becoming a political issue. Ron De Santis, the Republican governor of Florida, has asked the Democratic US President Joe Biden to allow the Serbian world number one to enter the United States. “The denial is unfair, unscientific and unacceptable,” the governor wrote in a letter to Biden on Tuesday.

Djokovic has withdrawn from the current ATP tournament in Indian Wells, California, without giving any reason. However, he should not have received a special permit to enter the USA due to his missing corona vaccination.

Ban on the unvaccinated

At the following tournament in Miami from March 19th to April 2nd, Djokovic should be able to attend, De Santis demands and took on Biden. “I urge you to reconsider. It’s time to put pandemic politics aside and give the American people what they want — let them play.” The US currently bans unvaccinated foreigners from entering the country. However, the COVID-19 emergency declarations are to end on May 11th.

Djokovic missed the Australian Open last year due to his lack of vaccination and says he will skip tournaments instead of getting vaccinated.
