What Dr. Durán contributed to medicine.
Frederic Durán-Jordà: what you didn’t know about the Spanish that revolutionized blood transfusion.
Blood transfusions existed, but this Spanish doctor revolutionized everything.
His contribution was silenced and little by little more is known about this great doctor.
The call Durán method, by Dr. Durán, made millions of people save their lives. He turned everything we knew about blood transfusion, the transport of blood and is recognized worldwide, but… why in spain is this figure so little known?
“For a scientist to take a step that others do not take and save thousands of people, why don’t they tell us these things in Spain?” he wonders. Iker Jimenez. Perhaps it is because of his political ideology, “but we don’t care about that,” adds the presenter. This is the biography of Dr. Durán.
In 1905 he was born in Barcelona Frederic Durán-Jordà. In 1935, one or two transfusions were made a day in Barcelona, it was not common (now there are around 800). With the outbreak of the Civil warblood needs increase and causes a development of the blood banks.
Transfusions were already being done at the time, but Durán-Jordà marks a milestone in global blood transfusion. He puts a filter on it, a three-way wrench to introduce air into the mechanism and be faster. He drove four new techniques, which was a historical fact.
His feat was silenced by the Franco Regime and the reasons are developed in the opening video of this article. Fortunately, Durán-Jordà is coming out of oblivion and is being placed in the place he deserves, as one of the great doctors in history.
