INTERVIEWS Since this week, Frank Boeckx no longer works with Bart Verbruggen, but the former Anderlecht goalkeeper coach is very fond of the Dutch goalkeeper. “He has the potential to become one of the best goalkeepers in the world.”
In the newspapers, Boeckx tells that he had to scout Verbruggen when he was still playing at NAC and he was already convinced after the warm-up and forwarded a positive report. “You don’t often see what I saw there,” says Boeckx.
When Verbruggen seemed to be on his way to Burnley last summer, Boeckx pulled out all the stops to prevent that from happening. “I begged Peter Verbeke on my bare knees not to let him go,” says Boeckx. The goalkeeper coach compared Verbruggen to a bottle of excellent Italian wine. “Leaving it alone for a while and letting it ripen triples the price. That’s what also happens with Verbruggen.”
But if you convince Verbruggen to stay, you also have to give him a chance to play. “When Brian Riemer took over, our season was pretty much lost.” According to Boeckx, that was the right time to give Verbruggen his chance in a number of matches.
