Reawakened, newly formed and full of zest for action, the men II of the Passau Beavers/Deggendorf Dragons syndicate went into the 2023 season of the middle state baseball class. However, the first home game went thoroughly “in the pants”. With 3:18 the Unterwurmbach Red Sox took the victory point to Gunzenhausen.
The Deggendorf Dragons and the Passau Beavers had the dilemma of not having enough players to field a full team. A great deal of work was done throughout the winter and two men’s teams were set up. Men I play in the middle state baseball league, men II in the middle state baseball class.
The games of the second are single games over seven innings with a two and a half hour time limit. The Lower Bavarians have to compete with the Eismannsberg Icesharks and the Unterwurmbach Red Sox from Middle Franconia, as well as the Oberpfälzer Michelbach Angels, Laub Raiders and the Guggenberger Legionären IV from Regensburg. And because the Deggendorf baseball field is currently being renovated, the men II of the game community (SG) are initially playing at the Beavers field in the Passau district of Patriching.
Former and current junior players formed the backbone of the team with a few “old hands”. Sven-Yannik Friedrich stood on the mound and behind the plate sat his wife Anna as a catcher. The powerful Red Sox, who played well together, gave the home defense little chance. In the first two innings, they ran five and six times across the plate to a huge lead until Filip Slomka finished the first time for SG. After the two runs by Sven Friedrich and Valentin Pritzl in the third round, there was some hope. But the guests immediately destroyed them again. Junior pitcher Filip Slomka was also unable to turn things around in the fourth and fifth innings. After the score was 18:3 for Unterwurmbach after five periods, the ten-run rule came into effect. The game ended prematurely after two and a quarter hours. There is still a lot to do for the SG.
