Football player Rai Vloet (ex-STVV) receives 2.5 years in prison for an accident in which a 4-year-old died

The court in Haarlem has sentenced professional football player Rai Vloet to 2.5 years in prison. It has been proven in court that the 27-year-old midfielder caused an accident on the A4 motorway due to reckless driving, in which 4-year-old Gio Roos from Zoetermeer died.

Because Vloet was heavily under the influence of alcohol, the court also banned him from driving for four years.

The prison sentence imposed by the court is lower than the requirement of the Public Prosecution Service. The public prosecutor in the case demanded 3.5 years in prison at the criminal hearing two weeks ago.

Strong drink

The accident took place on November 14, 2021 near Hoofddorp. At the criminal hearing two weeks ago, Vloet admitted that he had consumed strong alcohol before getting into the car after an early ended party in Amsterdam. The former player of PSV, NAC, Excelsior and Heracles Almelo, among others, was in the car with a friend when he drove into the other car around midnight, without braking. Vloet was traveling at 193 kilometers per hour at the time of the collision.

Vloet’s friend initially took the blame by posing as the driver to the police. When the footballer later became aware of the tragic consequences, he decided to tell the truth.

Suspended

Vloet played football for Heracles Almelo until the beginning of last year, but switched to FC Astana in Kazakhstan and now plays football for the Russian FK Ural. Heracles decided to suspend him after it emerged that his involvement in the fatal accident was greater than the footballer had previously claimed.
