The ATP announced on Friday the disappearance of line judges from the circuit from 2025. They will be replaced by an electronic device (ELC), which will signal faults in matches in order to improve the precision of arbitration.
“Tradition is at the heart of tennis and linesmen have played an important role in the gamerecognized Andrea Gaudenzi, the boss of the ATP, in a press release. That said, we have a responsibility to embrace innovation and new technologies. Our sport deserves the most accurate form of officiating and we are delighted to be able to offer it across our entire circuit from 2025.”
For several seasons, technological refereeing has been used alongside line judges in the ATP circuit. The threat of the disappearance of line judges had already been hovering for a few years, Novak Djokovic being in particular a supporter of the adoption of this device.
