Julia Grabher slipped into the main draw as a “lucky loser” at the Master 1000 tournament in Madrid and went straight into the second round on Wednesday.
Austria’s best tennis player defeated the Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova 6: 1, 7: 6 (5) and now meets the Polish world number one Iga Swiatek.
The day before, Grabher was clearly beaten 1:6, 2:6 by the Ukrainian Dajana Jastremska in the second qualifying round.
“The hurdle couldn’t be bigger, the distribution of roles is clear. She has to win, I want to present myself in the best possible way and surprise, I’m highly motivated and I’m really looking forward to the game,” writes Grabher, in 92nd place in the WTA ranking Facebook about the upcoming duel with Swiatek.
