Manchester City have handed Manchester City Council a £300m project to modernize the Etihad Stadium and increase its capacity from 53,400 to over 60,000. Plans include leveraging space for restaurants, a hotel and workspace for start ups and mid-sized companies and, once approved, would be completed within three years.
The club opened a form between February and March to receive responses from fans and stated that they are “in favor of the concepts and proposals presented”. Inside, the stadium would receive a new sector of stands in the North Stand, above the lower ring. This sector will have cabins with an even higher view of the field. There is also the idea of allowing fans to walk through the roof of the Etihad.
In addition to the changes to the stadium itself, the project includes a square for the supporters to gather with capacity for 3,000 people, with several bars and restaurants, a new official store, museum and a hotel for 400 people. City also want to create a workspace for start ups and medium-sized companies that want to collaborate with the club and its partners.
“Over several months, we have been developing concepts and designs for a better fan experience and year-round entertainment at Etihad Stadium. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our fans and the local community for taking part in our recent consultation, not only completing the questionnaire, but sharing detailed comments with us which have been carefully reviewed and considered,” said City COO Danny Wilson.
“As with all of the club’s undertakings, ensuring that our local community benefits is a key priority and we believe these proposals will deliver long-term economic and social opportunities, building on the regeneration work in East Manchester delivered by City Football Group. since 2008,” he added.
According to Manchester City, the renovation of the Etihad Stadium will generate 2,600 jobs for the Greater Manchester region.
