On Saturday, April 22, the national titles were fought in Veenendaal during the Dutch Para-badminton Championship 2023.
Saturday, April 22, it is 10 am in the Vallei sports hall in Veenendaal.
Mayor Gert-Jan Kats puts on his chain of office because he will kick off the 1e shuttle of this edition of the NK Para-badminton. In his short speech, he indicates that he considers it an honor to be able to do this, which is normally a task for the alderman for sports, but also that he is impressed by what he sees. In the opening game, which the mayor plays well, it may be said, a short rally actually ensues in which opponent Erik-Jan Koekoek scores the point after all. With this action, the matches will start anyway.
There are played on 6 courses by a total of 30 players who have come from all parts of the Netherlands. All parts must be played in both wheelchair badminton and standing badminton. This happens in short matches, but there are also long matches which eventually resulted in a winner after 3 games with a small difference in the score of each game.
The atmosphere is good, and very sporty, everyone knows each other. It was good to see that, despite the fact that the adapted badminton world is not that large, there were a number of “new” players in the field, which makes the working group adapted badminton happy. The organization in Veenendaal had built another attractive stage with seats in the middle part of the sports hall, snacks and drinks for everyone. There was also room for the players to take sufficient rest despite the many matches and otherwise the competition management ensured that players did get the necessary rest by deliberately not calling a party to the playing court.
For the players it is a day of seeing each other again, but also a day of great effort. Yes, then you should not register for everything, it is said and that is true. However, delivering a performance as champion of the Netherlands often has a greater content for these players than we all think, good to make it possible with that knowledge that our players can play all parts at this Dutch Championship. Just get there between 10 am and 7 pm Playing a match almost every hour is a tough task for many players.
The NK Para-Badminton is also a switch for the referees who were appointed. The scoring is no different, but the playing fields are and the way of serving is too, and to make it even more difficult, games are played on half playing fields, but also on whole playing fields. In addition, areas in the playing field are also considered out, in short, it is also a challenge for the referees to do everything right. This year there was a first, it is the 1e time that at an NK Para-badminton all matches were led by a BN referee. An achievement was also made by these people, 6 lanes, 6 referees, so every round on the track.
But, by 6:30 PM the time has come, all matches have been played. The list with the winners has been printed, who will receive the encouragement prize from the municipality of Veenendaal, a challenge cup, has been determined, and the calculation for the winner of the Carol de Meijer trophy has been completed. The board member top sport of Badminton Netherlands, Pieter van Soerland, is present. The prize giving follows. In addition, the organization, through Edwin Schriemer, thanks everyone in advance for their presence, for their cooperation in the organization and especially all players for delivering a great performance without injury, worthy of applause. Pieter also takes his proverbial hat off in his short word for what he has seen. What follows is an award ceremony that also lasts more than 45 minutes. Everyone, including the non-prize winners, remains present until the end. Para-Badminton is also a bit of a family.
