After FC Bayern’s 1-1 draw against Manchester City and the associated quarter-finals in the Champions League, Thomas Tuchel was upset with the referee.
“We had them back on the hook. Even more than we had them in Manchester. But we really didn’t get anything in 180 minutes but reinforcements and encouragement to turn it around again. We weren’t lucky in the match, so I’m very happy like we played today,” said Tuchel after the 1-1 draw DAZN and began his criticism of the team of referees: “Two couldn’t keep up the level – and that was the space and the referee. Otherwise it was great.”
When moderator Laura Wontorra said that she now wanted to talk about the referee’s performance, Tuchel immediately intervened: “I’d rather not. Grade 6.”
Tuchel continues: “We arrive here 0-3. We definitely need these small decisions. It starts after four or five minutes. We have a stick error from King (Kingsley Coman; editor’s note) in defence. Then there’s a foul. And instead of us getting a free kick and a yellow card, we get an offside and they get the ball. Then there was a tactical foul and everyone says to us, ‘There’s a yellow card coming up’ “Nothing happens. We fouled Jamal Musiala 17 yards from goal and nothing happened. There you go. Of course we need situations like this if we want to score three goals. Of course we need a deflected free-kick or one in the Angle.”
Tuchel did not even go into the larger situations that had caused a stir. Referee Clément Turpin had caused unrest with several decisions. Among other things, the two penalties were disputed. First Dayot Upamecano got a shot in the arm, but didn’t significantly change the direction of the ball. Then Sadio shot Mané City defender Manuel Akanji in the forearm from point-blank range.
Thomas Tuchel sees a yellow-red card
The Frenchman also showed Upamecano the red card in the first half for an emergency brake, but only revised his decision minutes later because the video referee had alerted him to an offside position.
In addition, Clement sent Tuchel off shortly before the end after showing him the yellow and red card for repeated complaining. Assistant coach Zsolt Löw even saw red.
During the game, former Bayern pros Mats Hummels, Mario Götze and Jérôme Boateng, among others, were critical of the referee on social media.
