2nd league: The dramatic finale in pictures: The tears of the HSV fans and the happiness of Frank Schmidt

After their team’s victory against Sandhausen, the HSV supporters believed that promotion was certain and stormed the field. To their chagrin, competitor Heidenheim turned his game in added time and rose straight up.

Hamburger SV and 1. FC Heidenheim gave the 2nd division an epic season finale. HSV took the lead early on against SV Sandhausen and confidently brought the 1-0 lead over time. Because promotion competitor Heidenheim was 1:2 behind against Jahn Regensburg at the same time, direct promotion seemed perfect for Hamburg. Fans who had traveled with them stormed the pitch in Sandhausen and cheered about the supposed promotion. But then a small football miracle happened. Heidenheim benefited from the eleven minutes of stoppage time and turned the game into a 3-2 win. That meant the championship in the 2nd division and direct promotion to the Bundesliga, while HSV had to be relegated against Stuttgart. For the Hamburg supporters, that was difficult to digest.
