Quebecer Édouard Julien had one hit in three appearances in his return to Major League Baseball, but the Minnesota Twins were defeated 4-2 by the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.
Julien, who was recalled in the last few days, was also retired twice on strikes. He also walked a base from pitcher Shohei Ohtani. Once Ohtani left the mound, he hit the ball to safety in the eighth inning.
Ohtani struck out nine batters in six innings, Mickey Moniak hit his second big hit of the series in the Angels win.
Ohtani was not involved in the decision despite allowing just one run and two hits. It was the fourth time in ten starts this season that he had nine or more strikeouts.
Opposing batters are batting just .142 against him this season, a major league high while he’s third in strikeouts with 80.
Moniak, who hit a triple to tie the game on Friday, hit a two-run double in the seventh to give a 3-1 lead.
Alex Kirilloff homered and Carlos Correa doubled for a run for the Twins, who lost four of their six games on the trip to California.
Chris Devenski (2-0) picked up the win and Carlos Estevez got his 12th save.
Correa got the Twins’ first hit in the third inning. His double to right center pushed Joey Gallo to the plate, he who had walked a base after two outs.
The Angels tied in the fourth inning as Hunter Renfroe and Jared Walsh opened the inning with hits before Gio Urshela’s sacrifice fly sent Renfroe home.
The Angels’ first three batters hit the trails in the seventh. Extra hitter Matt Thaiss walked to chase starter Pablo Lopez (2-3). Zach Neto followed with a right double and Moniak pushed both of his teammates to the plate with a double.
Moniak came close to making a spectacular catch in the eighth in the left field stands on a Kirilloff hit, but he fumbled the ball and the Twins hitter was credited with a home run.
The Angels responded with an insurance run on a Matt Thaiss double late in the eighth.
