Blue Jays: A golden opportunity for Otto Lopez

Quebecer Otto Lopez will have his first opportunity to make a name for himself in major league baseball this season, as he will be playing for the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night.

The 24-year-old infielder has been officially recalled by the Queen City team following the addition of Santiago Espinal’s name to the 10-day injured list. The latter has been suffering from inflammation in his right hamstrings since Sunday.

Lopez had to wait patiently for his turn in the minor ranks after leaving a strong impression in spring training camp. In 11 games, he drove in four runs while batting .348.

His start to the season at Buffalo, at the AAA level, was below expectations, but the Dominican-born player has already proven himself at the major level. Last year, he made nine plate appearances with the Jays, driving in three runs.

Toronto begins a four-game series Monday night against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.
