Bundesliga: LASK forces Austria to its knees

Dominik Fitz equalized the early Linz lead by Keito Nakamura (4th) shortly after the break (48th), but Marin Ljubicic (80th) and Moses Usor (90th) shot LASK to a deserved victory. Austria dropped back to fifth place behind Rapid due to the defeat and will go into the final round on Saturday two points behind.

In order to be able to intercept Hütteldorfer, who are guests at Austria Klagenfurt, the violets need a home win against champions Salzburg and a Klagenfurt victory. However, the Viennese Austrians have already secured fifth place and thus a place in the national European Cup play-off.

LASK defeats Austria

LASK said goodbye to their fans with a win in the last home game of the season. The people of Linz defeated Austria Vienna 3-1 and celebrated a win after the last three unsuccessful games. Austria, on the other hand, experienced a setback in the long-distance duel with Rapid for fourth place.

Lively game with LASK lightning start

The 15,400 fans in Linz’s Raiffeisen Arena, who, together with the club, said goodbye to goalkeeper Alexander Schlager, who is about to be transferred to RB Salzburg, Marvin Potzmann, Jan Boller and Nemanja Celi, saw a lively game with an increase in chances for the LASK. Nakamura completed the first offensive action to give Linz the lead (4th). After a nice pass from Florian Flecker, the Japanese hit the far corner from the penalty area.

The black and white followed, but didn’t manage to catch up. Ibrahim Mustapha (14th) and Marvin Potzmann (18th) missed great chances to make it 2-0, a little later Haris Tabakovic equalized on the other side. The goalscorer shot wide alone in front of goalkeeper Tobias Lawal (22nd).

Austria’s second chance equalized shortly after the break. After a blocked Tabakovic shot, Fitz used the margin (48th). The guests got stronger now, but were initially lucky twice as Marin Ljubicic (64th) and Moses Usor (78th) only hit the post. Ljubicic’s shot in the 80th minute landed well, and Usor put the finishing touch in the 90th minute.

Comments on the game:

Dietmar Kühbauer (LASK trainer): “A great finish. The team showed from the first minute that we want to win the game. The bottom line is that we have a good team from number one to number 25 and they showed that. The boys did incredibly well. There’s Rapid and Austria, who have similar budgets, and we left them behind. Unfortunately, we don’t have the money from Salzburg.”

Michael Wimmer (Austria-Trainer): “In the first half we were discouraged and without conviction, not compact. We’re not interested in what happens on the other pitches, we can’t influence that. We have to keep to ourselves, we’re two points behind now. Anything is possible in football. We have to get three points in Salzburg and will play to win. We showed that we can play against such teams, that we can also defeat such teams. If it is the case that we are fifth at the end of the day, then we go to the play-offs and we have to reach our goal via the play-offs.”
