In the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open, two German professionals met with Daniel Altmaier and Yannick Hanfmann. After a tough struggle, the lucky loser Altmaier prevailed 7:6 (3), 6:3 against the qualifier Hanfmann.

The 24-year-old from Kempen now meets the Spaniard Jaume Munar in the round of 16 – a still quite rewarding task in the tightly packed grid of the highly endowed ATP Masters 1000 event in the Spanish capital.

Greatest career success to date

Incidentally, it was the first meeting between the two players from Germany – so far Altmaier and Hanfmann had never faced each other at the ATP tour level.

For Altmaier, reaching the round of 16 is clearly the best result so far in an ATP Tour event in the 1000 category.
