Michael van Gerwen celebrates a historic triumph in London. With his final victory over Gerwyn Price, the Dutchman replaces Phil Taylor as the record winner of the Premier League. Pleasurable declarations of war follow.
PPremier League triumphant Michael van Gerwen really liked his role. When a reporter asked him in the cramped London press room whether he was still the boss on the darts tour, the Dutchman grinned with relish.
Van Gerwen said: “Do you really want me to answer that question? I’m always the boss. Even if I’m not the favourite, I’m still the man to beat.” Van Gerwen had previously won the Premier League again with a 11:5 final victory over Welsh favorite Gerwyn Price.
His seventh Invitational title made him the sole record winner, having previously tied with long-departed Arrows legend Phil Taylor. Van Gerwen called the record “a nice extra”, on the big stage he gave free rein to his emotions after the victories over Price and before that in the semifinals against the current world champion Michael Smith (10:8).
“There’s more to come,” announces van Gerwen
“I think I played fantastic darts today. What could I wish for more than winning this trophy for the seventh time?” asked van Gerwen. He’s far from finished. “I love what I do – there’s more to come,” announced the title winner.
Exciting weeks are ahead in the darts scene. England’s Smith tops the rankings. Van Gerwen, who was surprisingly clearly inferior to Smith in the World Cup final at the beginning of January, and Price are currently his toughest opponents.
In just three weeks (June 15th to 18th) the world elite will be guests in Frankfurt am Main for the Team World Championship. Then the German duo Gabriel Clemens and Martin Schindler want to fight for a major title.
