Technical director Mateu Alemany does not leave FC Barcelona after all. According to trainer Xavi, the Spaniard recently reversed his decision to leave the Spanish club.
“Mateu has been very clear,” Xavi told a press conference on Friday. “He has told us that he would like to be here and that he thinks Barcelona is a great club. Mateu is a hard worker. He has brought a lot of good to the club.”
Sixty-year-old Alemany surprisingly announced his departure at the beginning of this month. It was agreed that he would remain with the Catalan club until June 30. Barcelona could still rely on the expertise of the driver until the transfer deadline on August 31.
Alemany joined FC Barcelona about two years ago. He did so after the election of Joan Laporta as chairman. Alemany worked closely with sporting director Jordi Cruijff, who announced his departure earlier this week. “We will miss Jordi”, Xavi said about the departing Dutchman.
Although Barcelona is burdened by towering debts, the 27-time national champion managed to put together a selection that could win La Liga this season under the leadership of Alemany. On Sunday, the title was secured on a visit to Espanyol.
Barcelona has already cut costs in recent years by, among other things, letting Lionel Messi go in 2021. But various loans and the sale of future TV income were crucial to make room for investment in the selection again.
