DISABLED SPORTS: Young people in the spotlight

The second edition of the Regional Games of the Future, an event organized from May 17 to 19 by the regional disabled sports committee of Hauts-de-France, was a great success.

Organized by the Hauts-de-France regional disabled sports committee in collaboration with the departmental disabled sports committee of the Somme, the Regional Handisport Games for the Future offer young people the opportunity to take part in a competitive and friendly multi-sport event. This aims to introduce as many young graduates to the French Handisport Federation competitive sports practices as well as inviting them to follow the disabled sports movement through this multi-disability and multi-sport meeting.

The technical director of the regional disabled sports committee of Hauts-de-France, Helene Fontaineadds some details: “This event is competitive for young people from our region, to whom we decided to combine discovery activities to offer a complete panel. 9 competitive activities are planned such as 5-a-side football, athletics, wheelchair basketball, boccia, fencing, swimming, table tennis, tri-cycling and blowpipe. Other discovery activities such as boxing, cardiogoal, all-terrain wheelchair, para-golf and archery are on the program. »

After this general presentation of the event, the director draws a first positive assessment of this meeting: “We are happy because it brought together a large number of people (48), which offered great diversity to the organizers and allowed them to discover young people they did not know since this kind of meeting can allow them to find athletes to send a Hauts-de-France delegation to participate in the National Games of the Future Handisport which take place in Brittany, in 2024.”

An event that smiles on everyone

Young and old, players and coaches, everyone is happy with the turn the event has taken. Gaspar Richaudtable tennis player, tells us why he is taking part in this event: “After my foot operation, I was forced to stop playing football and that’s when I discovered table tennis in college. It has now been 4 years since I graduated from theAmiens Sports Table Tennis, I play disabled sports at the regional level. In this discipline, it is the individual aspect that made me love since I can only rest my mistakes on myself. It is a mental battle against the adversary as well as against oneself. » He also explains the importance of sport in his life: « When I play sports, it’s the only time I forget my handicap. It allows me to not think about it and focus on the competition. »

To lead the activities, coaches specialized in their fields were present throughout the event. We met one of them, Brice Baticlethe representative of Somme Departmental Weightlifting Committee which recalls the importance of setting up this type of event for disabled sports: “It is important to show everyone that any sport is accessible to everyone since all the disciplines are adaptable to everyone while keeping the difficulty associated with the sport. »

To conclude, the departmental delegate for the departmental committee of the Somme Benjamin Gaillien gave him a final assessment of the event: “We are very proud to have been able to organize these Regional Games since the main interested parties, the young people, took great pleasure in discovering the various activities on offer. The objective was also to maintain a certain continuity since the National Games for the Future of Handisport will take place in 2024. The event was a success and we are proud of it. »
