Last November, the International Olympic Committee announced that Singapore will host the first-ever Olympic Esports Week (SOE) and June 2023.
The SOE is designed to support the development of esports within the Olympic movement and to engage with the competitive gaming community.
This is not the first time that Singapore has paved the way in hosting a new IOC event, as the city also hosted the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore 2010.
So what do you need to know about SOE and how to follow it?
What will Olympic Esports Week 2023 offer?
The highlight of the SOE is the Olympic Esports Series Finals, the culmination of this year’s Olympic Esports Series (OSE).
Ten games have been chosen by the international federations to represent their sport in the OSEs. Since March, players have participated in qualifying events in the various games.
Esports Olympic Finalists will compete for the title of Esports Olympic Series Champion or, in chess, the Esports Olympic Series Chief Master, Singapore.
Along with the ten-game finals, the SOE will also showcase the best of virtual sports, including showcasing the latest innovations, panel discussions and exhibition matches from other games.
In short, some of the best players in the world will be in Singapore to crown the winners of the first ever Esports Olympic Series. Participants will also be able to try their hand at the game in a free-to-play zone.
When and where is Olympic Esports Week 2023?
SOE 2023 is an event as much as a four-day festival showcasing the best of virtual sports.
This seminal event, created by the IOC in association with the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth of Singapore, Sport Singapore, and the National Olympic Council of Singapore, will take place from 22 to 25 June 2023 at the Conference Center and exhibition of Suntec.
What games will be played during Olympic Esports Week?
The 10 official sports and games of the Esports Olympic Series are: archery (Tic Tac Bow), le baseball (WBSC eBaseball™: Power Pros), Chess (Chess.com), cycling (Zwift), dancesport (Just Dance), motorsport (Gran Turismo), sail (Virtual Regatta), le tir (Fortnite), le taekwondo (Virtual Taekwondo) and the tennis (Tennis Clash).
The 2023 Olympic Esports Series is a global virtual and simulated sports competition, created by the IOC and in collaboration with International Federations (IFs) and game publishers.
Other games will also be presented during the SOE.
