Field stormer who shut down FC Groningen – Ajax not prosecuted

The 27-year-old Groningen man who ran onto the field with a banner during the match between FC Groningen and Ajax on Sunday will not be prosecuted. According to a spokesman for the Public Prosecution Service (OM), he will be fined because he was arrested by the police for not being able to show an ID. It is not known how high the fine is.

A police spokeswoman previously reported that entering a football field is not an offence. The field attacker helped to stop the game on Sunday. That game was abandoned after supporters threw smoke bombs on the field for the second time. The home club said on Sunday that it had made every effort to prevent disturbances, such as the deployment of extra stewards and checks on fireworks. On Tuesday the match was played without an audience, Ajax won 3-2.

The municipality of Groningen announced on Tuesday that it is concerned about safety in the stadium due to incidents like this. Next Sunday, FC Groningen will play the last home game of this season against Sparta. According to a municipal spokesperson, that duel may only take place if safety in the stadium is guaranteed and the municipality also knows how the club will arrange this. Discussions between the club and the municipality will be held this week, after which the municipality will decide on the permit. The match may only be played without an audience.
