I admit: I am a hopeless romantic. My wife will probably make a surprised face now, so I should add: …in football.
And that’s why I don’t begrudge – everyone does – Marco Reus the bowl today.
Born in Dortmund, active for BVB for ten years from the F youth. Then sorted out: “Lack of physical robustness,” it said. When he followed his black and yellow heart in 2012 and returned from Gladbach, Dortmund had just won the championship twice in a row.
After that, for ten years, nothing worked technically – quite a few critics also made the point of Captain Reus.
He was the constant in a club that almost every year a superstar left and that consistently didn’t win the championship. Reus was representative of the six second places that Dortmund have had to swallow since then.
His career – often a torture: he missed the 2014 World Cup due to an injury in the last preparatory game, so he can’t call himself world champion. He also missed the EM 2016 – pubic arthritis.
He felt like he tore everything that can tear in the human body: cruciate ligament, syndesmosis, outer ligament, muscle fibers. Again and again he tried again and fought his way back.
There was no shortage of more lucrative offers, but he gave up for his BVB. When he often had to go to the bench this season, he grudgingly accepted that – and also that the bosses hesitated for a long time to give him a new contract.
Today he can crown himself and get the longed-for bowl. I’m not a Dortmund fan, but I would give it to Reus with all my heart!
