Gifu (Gifu City) and Aoyama Gakuin (Tokyo), which are said to be the earliest high schools in Japan to establish baseball clubs, played against each other for the first time on the 21st at Nagaragawa Stadium in Gifu City. In the match between the “oldest baseball clubs”, Gifu won 8-3.
The founding of Gifu remains in 1884. Seigaku is said to have originated in 1983, when senior students and current high school students practiced at its predecessor school. The match between the two schools was planned to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Gifu’s high school, and Gifu proposed it to Seigaku.
In the game, Gifu, who advanced to the top 4 of the prefectural tournament last fall and this spring, took the lead when they scored 4 points in the 4th inning. Seigaku also scored in the 6th and 9th innings to counterattack and liven up the game.
At the closing ceremony, Ken Watanabe, head of Seigaku High School, made the audience excited by saying, “It was a valuable experience. I want to get revenge at Jingu Stadium.” Gifu head coach Eiji Kitagawa said, “It was an unprecedented matchup between the two oldest players, and it was a grand success. I’m happy to go to the revenge match.” (Yu Osawa)
