Luis Figo doesn’t see Lionel Messi winning the Ballon d’Or

Halfway through, who is best placed to win the 2023 Ballon d’Or? Several names logically emerge at this stage. Especially that of Lionel Messi. The Argentinian genius has a huge argument in his favour: he won the World Cup with Argentina. Still, the rest of his season with PSG was very mediocre, marred by many controversies. So does the Pulga deserve an eighth individual trophy? Luis Figo disagrees, as he said at the Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony.

“I wouldn’t choose Messi because he’s no longer involved in the Champions League and I think this competition has a lot of impact for people who vote for the Ballon d’Or. It’s really difficult to choose, it will depend on the rest of the season. In particular, we have to wait for the Champions League final, which can make a lot of difference. But I might choose Haaland more. He is still in the competition, and is having a fantastic season”.
