Nils Stump: Switzerland has a judo world champion for the first time

The Swiss Judo and Ju-Jitsu Association writes about an incredible, emotional and surprising day. No wonder: Switzerland has a judo world champion for the first time in its history. So 26-year-old Nils Stump made for a historic day.

In the -73 kilogram category, Stump prevailed in a duel with Manuel Lombardo. The two had never met before, so the final was a grab bag of chances for both sides. The regular duration of the fight had already expired when it came to the decisive scene. Lombardo illegally leaned on his head during his Seoi-nage attack, which resulted in a disqualification.

Fabienne Kocher fought for her last major success in 2021. She won bronze at the World Championships. 20 years ago Sergei Aschwanden won the silver medal at the World Championships. There has never been gold – until Tuesday.
