PSV has won the cup for the second year in a row. After 120 minutes there was still a 1-1 score on the scoreboard, so penalties had to make the decision. After a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, the team from Eindhoven came out on top.
A terrible first half followed by a nice second half. Where there was hardly any football in the first 45 minutes and the game was marred by many riots, you saw in the second half that the two teams were able to make it a fun match. In the end, it was penalties that decided the cup final.
An own goal by Jarrad Branthwaite just before the break gave Ajax the lead. Moments before, the defender was just close to the opening goal on the other side. An unfortunate moment and PSV had to chase.

Riots
That happened in a much nicer second half. Because the first half was very bad advertising for football. Whining, nagging and, above all, many violations and disturbances. There was hardly any football and if the ball rolled, it was not good.
In the second half there was a lot more football and that led to many chances. Brian Brobbey shot after he had outplayed the goalkeeper against the post. On the other hand, a goal by André Ramalho was disallowed for offside.
The deserved equalizer came after three quarters of the game. A good individual action from Xavi Simons who gave a perfect cross to Thorgan Hazard. The substitute could easily tap in. 1-1.

Extension
After that, both teams were evenly matched. Both teams had chances to decide the game within 90 minutes, but that didn’t happen. An extension followed.
In that extension, both Ajax and PSV opted for the defense. Hardly any chances were created and they seemed to rely on the penalties.
Dramatic penalties
The penalty shootout came. But both Ajax and PSV missed the second and third knock. Successively, the penalties were missed by Brobbey, Ramalho, Timber and Sangaré.
Edson Alvarez also missed the fifth penalty for Ajax. Drommel remained standing and was able to turn the ball easily. Fabio Silva decided the cup final by using his penalty. PSV extends the cup and can celebrate.
