HSV postpones the decision in the promotion race to the 34th matchday

Stand: 20.05.2023

Hamburger SV secured participation in the relegation by beating Greuther Fürth. If they are one point behind Heidenheim, direct promotion to the Bundesliga is still possible on the last day of the second division. However, the schedule gives little hope.

GIs this season going to extra time for the Rothosen? Hamburger SV kept its chances of direct promotion to the Bundesliga by beating SpVgg Greuther Fürth and at least secured third place in the table and relegation.

In the sold-out Volksparkstadion, 56,537 spectators watched a 2-1 (1-0) win against the Franconians. Miro Muheim (27th minute) and Laszlo Benes (69th penalty) scored for HSV. Lukas Petkov (84th) scored for Fürth.

In the last second division game on Sunday at SV Sandhausen, which has already been relegated, Hamburger Bakery Jatta is missing because of a yellow-red card, as is Ludovit Reis, who received his fifth yellow card in the first half. Fürther Dickson Abiama saw the red card. With the win, HSV is one point behind second-placed Heidenheim.

Heidenheim’s easy final task

With a 2-2 draw between Arminia Bielefeld and SC Paderborn, the guests celebrated staying in the class even before kick-off. In a game with a lot of fighting, HSV tried to control the game, but repeatedly had problems with inaccuracies in possession and the Fürther pressing. The guests had the first chance, but Ragnar Ache (25th) put the ball over the Hamburg goal from close range. On the other side, Muheim used a mistake made by the Fürth goalkeeper Andreas Linde to take the lead.

In the second half, Fürth increasingly took the initiative. Nevertheless, HSV set the accents on the offensive. First Sonny Kittel (61.) narrowly missed the Fürth goal from 16 meters after assist by Robert Glatzel, then the midfielder directed a wonderful heel-heel to Glatzel, who went down in the penalty area after contact with Gian-Luca Itter – penalty. Substitute Benes turned it into the middle. Glatzel (79th) only hit the post after a misunderstanding in Fürth. Shortly before the end, Petkov overcame HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer-Fernandes after Hamburg couldn’t get the ball out of their own penalty area.

Despite the supposedly solvable task on the 34th matchday, the Hamburgers are not spared the relegation process as in 2014, 2015 and 2022. Heidenheim has relegation candidate Jahn Regensburg in the last game of the regular season in the home game. Last year, HSV failed in the two relegation games at Hertha BSC.
