Seko Fofana, the song of departure?

Seko Fofana has again dazzled the end of RC Lens’ journey in Ligue 1. With his nine goals and six assists in all competitions, he is doing better than last season. Once again, he will be watched very closely during the transfer window which opens in a few days.

Its extension until June 2025 was announced with great fanfare after the victory against Lorient on August 31, on the lawn of Bollaert. Seko Fofana (28) was coming out of a full season, his second in the Sang et Or jersey. Last summer, the midfielder was more than attentive to offers. The management of the club had opened the door ajar but only if the requested price, that is to say almost 40 million euros, was reached.

Like last season, it will not be closed to a start

Surprisingly enough, few clubs knocked on the door. Tottenham inquired but preferred to bet on Yves Bissouma. The PSG was in contact with the sports management of the artesian club, without the discussions being pushed. Eventually Renato Sanches was recruited.

However, the Ivorian international, who was born and raised in Paris, saw himself evolving in the capital. Moreover, his performances against PSG have been highlighted by observers and hailed in the Paris locker room where the most influential members hold him in high esteem, while the midfield has not given all the guarantees this season. Can we see him land in the capital? Not sure. If Luis Campos succeeds in attracting Manuel Ugarte, it will be difficult to position oneself on this profile knowing that it is necessary to slim down in this sector of play. The president of Lens, Joseph Oughourlian, and his PSG counterpart, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, maintain otherwise good relations.

Lens and his coach do not want to be completely plucked. Brice Samba, Kevin Danso and Loïs Openda are courted. However, after three full seasons in the North, Fofana could have a good exit if all parties meet there. It’s hard to imagine Lens selling him for less than 30 million euros. English clubs are interested. It remains to be seen which project the player is ready to accept. The Sang et Or know how to anticipate – they have already shown it – they have targeted several midfielders. But not necessarily to replace Fofana. Because with the Champions League, the workforce should indeed be denser.
