Steelers and Mitch Trubisky sign two-year extension

PITTSBURGH — Mitch Trubisky it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

With one year left on his contract as a backup quarterback, the Pittsburgh Steelers reached a two-year extension with the former No. 2 overall pick, a source confirmed to ESPN.

Early Thursday, the general manager of the Steelers, Omar Khanhe had said in an interview with “The Pat McAfee Show” that he was “negotiating an extension” with Trubisky, but did not disclose the length of the deal.

“We feel good about our quarterbacks, and that was an important piece,” he said. Omar Khan at the interview. “We obviously have Kenny Pickett as owner. We feel great about Mitch Trubisky in the role that he plays. He feels good about it. We have added to Mason Rudolph. We feel very good about the QB’s.”

The move also comes after the Steelers re-signed Rudolph to a one-year contract after being in free agency, keeping the quarterback room intact.

Although Trubisky, selected to captain the 2022 team, lost the starting job early last season, he was a valuable resource for the first-round pick, Kenny Pickett, and offered to the Steelers a solid insurance policy in specific appearances and openings.

Khan was transparent about his desire to retain Trubisky at the NFL scouting combine. NFL in February, hinting at an extension.

By signing a two-year, $14 million contract with Pittsburgh on the first day of free agency in 2022, Trubisky, drafted by the Bears in 2017, he joined the Steelers looking to jumpstart his career after a year as a backup to Josh Allen in Buffalo. However, the offense struggled to find its footing in the early games of the season, often lacking in explosiveness with a conservative game plan. Looking for a spark, the coaching staff brought in Pickett to replace Trubisky as the starter at halftime in a Week 4 loss to the New York Jets. In his first four starts at PittsburghTrubisky passed for 653 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

“The fact that I was voted captain means that I have to be here and put my hand in and lead these guys in any way that I can, even if it’s not on the field,” Trubisky told ESPN last year.

After moving into a support role for Pickett, he had one more start in Week 14 against the Carolina Pantherscompleting 17 of 22 attempts for 179 yards in a 24-16 win. Trubisky saw action in two other games after Pickett suffered concussions, first helping Trubisky or the Steelers to win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6 when he was 9 of 12 for 144 yards and a touchdown. Then, in Week 13, he threw three interceptions and a touchdown in a loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

In six seasons in the NFL, Trubisky he completed 64.2% of his pass attempts and threw 68 touchdown passes for 43 interceptions in 64 games (55 starts).
