Sword and shield: for a weekend, Guernes plunges back into the Middle Ages

The whole village of Guernes (Yvelines) will be propelled to the time of Middle Ages for two days, Saturday May 13 and Sunday May 14, 2023. Launched in 2017, the medieval festival could not be held for three years due to the health crisis. This edition therefore marks its great comeback. The event will always begin with a parade on Saturday at 11 a.m.

“This year, we welcome a falconer from Eure with different species of birds of prey. He will give two demonstrations, at 1:45 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on both days. The public will then be able to talk with him about his profession, the history of falconry, which was first used for hunting, or even about the conservation actions for the species in which he participates. »

“The mayor, Pascal Brusseaux, will open the march in disguise, continues the organizer with confidence. It will be followed by the invited troops and the spectators who wish it. » Shields, helmets, improvised tunics… The period costumes are strongly encouraged.

Jousting and sword fighting

Four troops of enthusiasts of the Middle Ages will offer a variety of entertainment throughout the weekend. games will oppose riders accustomed to tournaments and European championships at 11:30 a.m. and 5:15 p.m.

equestrian games are also on the program at 2:30 p.m. and children are invited to participate in a scrum at 4 p.m. “We offer them to replay small sketches in which they compete with pool fries”, explains Corinne Pinard.

Finally, the knights, on foot this time, will cross swords at 12:45 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. “They are not pretending, warns the association manager. They get big swords and shields, it’s impressive. »

A camp like back in the days

On the sidelines of the fighting, a camp of tents and awnings will give an insight into medieval daily life. The public will be able to learn more about weapons or armour, the appearance as well as the evolution of the sword, gastronomy or even the outfits worn at the time. Pony ridesa bouncy castle, make-up and archery stands will be on offer.

And village artisanal will complete the set and allow visitors to stock up on jewellery, soaps, sausages or nougat. “Objects made from horseshoes will also be offered for sale,” concludes Corinne Pinard.
