“The generational change is one step away, but I would wait”

Ivan Ljubicic, the last coach in Roger Federer’s career, has offered his point of view about the changes that are taking place in the current tennis scene. Although calm after his defeat, Novak Djokovic saw how Holger Rune prevented the Serb from defending his title in the ATP Roma 2023, while a few days later, Rafael Nadal announced that he could not go to Roland Garros. The Croatian coach was chatting with Gazzetta dello Sport about the generational change, as reported by Ubitennis.

Is there a generational change?

“That’s it. Novak had a hard time this year in Rome, Rafa didn’t come and has trouble coming back, Roger has already said goodbye. Obviously, the generational change is one step away, but for the complete change I would wait a little longer”, explains Ivan Ljubicic.

Sinner, Rune and Alcaraz

“It is difficult to make predictions. You are creating your path. Compared to Alcaraz, it is different, a bit longer. There is no point in rushing. Rune and Alcaraz let defeats slip more easily, Sinner really wants to get an important result, but he has to be patient because he is very young and very strong.

Holger believes a lot in himself, it’s important to have that drive to always want more. Alcaraz is calmer, more mature, more aware and knows how to handle situations better on the track. I don’t see a big difference between the two players, there are fewer and fewer.”

On Italians and the factor of being local

“We can’t talk about failure, but it’s natural that we all expected a little more from Jannik. Musetti lost against a strong player like Tsitsipas. It is often very difficult for young people to play at home. There is that extra pressure that becomes a disadvantage. As they grow and mature, they will be able to use that factor to their advantage, but it takes experience, a lot of patience. There are many Italian players who have the opportunity to do well.”
