The Latvian 3×3 basketball team, which consists of Kārlis Lasmanis, Nauris Miezis, Agnis Čavars and Francis Lācis, started the World Cup in Vienna on Wednesday with a loss.
Latvian basketball players lost 17:21 to the USA in the B subgroup match.
The game started with an accurate long shot by Lasmanis, but the Americans took the initiative in the continuation, gaining a three-point advantage (10:7).
Miezis and Čavars, each scoring a two-point shot, restored Latvia’s +1, however, the USA basketball players quickly gained a four-point lead (16:12), which they were able to protect until the end of the game, causing the Latvians a loss.
Miezis scored six points and three rebounds, Chavars had five points and five rebounds, while Lasmanis and Lācis added four and two points, respectively. Jimmer Fredette was the most productive among the winners with 11 points.
Latvian basketball players will play one more match on Wednesday, meeting Slovenia at 20.45. The tournament is broadcast live on the official “YouTube” channel of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
On Thursday, the Latvian national team will have a day off, but on Friday, matches will be played against Austria (at 6:35 p.m.) and Australia (at 8:45 p.m.).
The winners of the group will qualify for the quarterfinals, while the second and third place winners will compete in the round of 16.
Lācis replaces Edgars Krūmiņas in this tournament – this decision was made after the training camp held in Ventspils, in which 14 candidates participated. Kārlis Apsītis and Kristaps Gludītis also went to the World Cup to help with the training process.
The foursome of the Latvian national team is competing in international club team tournaments this year, divided into two teams. Miezis and Lasmanis together with two Chinese basketball players represent the “Beijing” team, while the “Riga” team continues to be represented by Krūmiņš and Čavars, playing together with a Chinese and a Serbian player.
The Latvian men’s national team will participate in the European Games tournament in Krakow in mid-June, and in the European Championship in Jerusalem in early September.
Latvia achieved its best result so far in 2019, when it won silver medals in Amsterdam, losing 14:18 to the USA in the final.
