The Spanish badminton academy leaves its mark at the Bozner Cup U17 International

The promises of Spanish badminton have not missed their appointment with the medals of the Bozner Cup U17 International played in the Italian town of Bolzano. And it is that the women’s doubles of Rocío Martín and Ángela Jiménez and the men’s of Raúl Bergua and Gonzalo Isabal hang the silver. It should also be noted that Alejandro Gállego reached the semifinals of the individual draw.

It should be remembered that the Andalusians Rubén Carreras, Rocío Martín and Ángela Jiménez, the Aragonese Alejandro Gállego, Gonzalo Isabal and Raul Bergua and the Asturians Alejandro Valdés and Laura Garijo put the Spanish accent in the five events of the championship.

It was in the women’s doubles where one of the great joys came. The Andalusian couple of Rocío Martín and Ángela Jiménez started as the second seed and showed why. They made their way to the final by beating Austrian aces Fiona Scrinzi and Amélie Thurnherr (21-12 and 21-15), the Dutch Meare Van Dalm and Anissa Wongsodimedjo (21-11, 18-21 and 21-13) and the Czechs Amélie Maixnerova and Erika Osickova (21-14 and 21-16). In this way they met with the Czech Nela Flligova and the Estonian Marija Paskotsi for the title, a duel that was charged with emotion and that finally could not fall on the side of the Spanish (14-21 and 17-21).

Another of the best news came from the men’s doubles thanks to the Aragonese Raúl Bergua and Gonzalo Isabal. They debuted by beating the Austrians Simon Yu Xuan Wang and Ziao Zhou (21-12 and 21-10) and reached the quarterfinals with a win against their compatriots Simon Sutterlutti and Aaron Waltl (21-9 and 21-16). Later, they beat the Hungarians Vince Felix Boros and Abel Balint Kiss (21-13 and 21-12) and certified their pass to the final without losing a single set after beating the Italians Zyver John De Leon and Davide Izzo (21-19 and 21-15). The battle for gold against the Germans Valerian Eckert and Alexander Philipp Zhang was as intense as it was exciting. The first game was a continuous tug of war that ended up falling to the rival side (19-21), but the Spanish hit the table to win the second (21-14). Things evened out again in the third set, which again narrowly turned favorable for the Germans (21-23).

On the other hand, Alejandro Gállego was the most outstanding of the eight Spaniards who participated in the individual tests. In the men’s event, the Aragonese reached the semifinals thanks to his triumphs over the Austrian Thomas Wiesler (21-8 and 21-12) and the Italians Davide Izzo (21-11 and 21-19) and Zyver John De Llleon (20- 22, 21-18 and 21-15), and was one step away from reaching the final by losing to the Romanian Luca Stefan Pandele by 21-9 and 21-8. The rest of the Spaniards did not manage to get past the round of 16, as was the case with Raúll Bergua, Gonzalo Isabal or Rubén Carreras, while the young Asturian promise Alejandro Valdés lost in the round of 32. In the women’s section, Laura Garijo and Ángela Jiménez also stayed in the round of 16, while Rocío Martín lost in the round of 16.

Lastly, in the mixed doubles event there were two outstanding Spanish couples. On the one hand, that of Alejandro Gállego and Rocío Martín, who reached the quarterfinals, leaving another Spanish couple along the way, that of the Asturians Alejandro Valdés and Laura Garijo. Rubén Carreras and Ángela Jiménez also reached the quarterfinals. On the other hand, Gonzalo Isabal reached the round of 16 teaming up with the Croatian Ana Pranic and Raúl Bergua could not get past the round of 16 together with the German Lisa Paula Bonnemann.
