The national university sport was once again the protagonist for another week in Valladolid on the occasion of the Spanish University Padel Championships held at The Players facilities with 45 competing couples belonging to 31 universities in the country.
After nearly 150 matches between the male and female categories, Valladolid crowned the universities of Granada (female category) and Barcelona (male) as the new university padel kings, who won the gold medals.
In the female category, María Álvarez and Eva Jiménez (University of Granada) beat Andrea Lima and Aitana Pérez, from the University of Seville, in the final. In the men’s category, Pol Espigol, forming a duo with Sergi Puertolas, from the University of Barcelona, clinched gold after defeating Igor Amondarain and Antonio Sánchez, from the Pontifical University of Salamanca, in the final.
The Polytechnic University of Madrid and Zaragoza received the bronze medal, for men and women, respectively. By universities (teams) Granada was gold, Barcelona silver and Alicante bronze.
The representation by the University of Valladolid, host, corresponded to the couples Laura Ganso and Marian Sicilia in the female category, and Álvaro García and Rodrigo Velázquez, in the male category, being eliminated in the group stage.
It should be remembered that the organization of these Spanish university paddle tennis championships, as it did in the past in Cross Country, futsal, tennis, volleyball, rugby 7, badminton, archery and swimming, has been carried out by the University of Valladolid with the collaboration of the Higher Sports Council, the Junta de Castilla y León, Valladolid City Council and the Padel Federation. After this championship, only the Orienteering Championship will remain to be played, which will be held in Portillo from May 19 to 21.
