A 19-year-old college baseball player died two days after sustaining head injuries when a team dugout collapsed on top of him.
Angel Mercado, a student and baseball player at Central Penn College, died Wednesday night at a hospital in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, his school said. The incident happened while he was volunteering in a youth baseball league.
“We understand he and others were working on a wooden shelter in a city park … in Harrisburg as part of a youth baseball league, when the structure collapsed from unexpectedly, causing very serious injuries to two volunteers,” the establishment said.
Cumberland County Coroner Charley Hall told CNN Mercado died of traumatic brain injury at 11:12 p.m. Wednesday night, a death he said was accidental.

“As friends who have become family, we mourn the heartbreaking loss of one of our own, a promising young athlete who lost his life for no reason while helping others enjoy the sport he loved. so much,” college president Linda Fedrizzi-Williams wrote.
“No words can adequately express our anguish,” she continued.
According to the statement, counselors will be on staff to support students and staff “during this time of tremendous loss and sadness affecting our community.”
Robert Stern, head baseball coach at Central Penn, set up a GoFundMe page to cover the young athlete’s funeral and medical expenses.
