06/06/2023 Heidelberg’s youth athletes of the year 2022 honored

All-rounder Jan-Ole Fischer, swimmer Maya Werner and HRK U18 rugby team honored

All-around fighter Jan-Ole Fischer (SG Heidelberg-Kirchheim), swimmer Maya Werner (SV Nikar Heidelberg) and the U18 team of the Heidelberg Rowing Club in sevens rugby: these are Heidelberg’s youth athletes and youth team of the year. At the youth sports ceremonies of the city and sports district of Heidelberg at the end of May 2023 in the casino of the Stadtwerke Heidelberg, these athletes were honored along with around 100 other young Heidelberg athletes who celebrated success last year as district, district and state champions, German title holders or international medal winners.

The youth athlete of the year, Jan-Ole Fischer from the SG Heidelberg-Kirchheim, celebrated the German championship title in the Jahn Nineathlon in the age group M18/19 in 2022 – a mixture of gymnastics, athletics and swimming. The expert jury chose Leon Mutschler from the Heidelberg Judo Club for second place in the youth sports awards ceremony: the judoka won the title at the southern German championship and came third at the German championship. He was also on the winner’s podium at several international tournaments. Third place went to wrestler Noah End from AC Germania Ziegelhausen: he won silver at the German championship in Greco-Roman style and the title at the state championships in both styles, Greco-Roman and freestyle.

The youth athlete of the year Maya Werner was happy about numerous top placings in 2022: At the German youth championships, the swimmer from SV Nikar in 2005 won the title over 200, 400, 800 and 1,500 meters freestyle as well as over 100 and 200 meters backstroke. She finished second in the 50m backstroke, 100m and 400m freestyle. She came second in the 1,500 meter freestyle at the German Championships and won bronze in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay at the European Youth Championships. Eva Steffens from TSG Rohrbach came second in the youth sports awards: the epee fencer became German U17 champion, took part in the European and World U17 Championships and was called up to the U20 national team for the first time. The jury chose Lilia Reinhard for third place: The swimmer from the deaf sports club in Heidelberg won the gold medal in age group D (2011/12) at the German Deaf Championships over 50 meters backstroke and 50 meters front crawl.

The U18s of the Heidelberg Rowing Club – German champions 2022 in sevens rugby – were honored as the best team of the year. The U9 team from JSC Heidelberg, Baden team champions in judo, came in second. The female U15 of the Heidelberg Rowing Club came third: The team won the German championship title in sevens rugby last year.
