Defeat in NBA Finals: Nuggets coach grumbles about team

Despite their different championship experiences, one thing can be said about the two coaches of the Denver Nuggets and Miami Heat: neither of them has trouble expressing how they feel about their teams.

Miami Heat and Denver Nuggets: Strong-spoken coaches

While Miami’s coach Erik Spoelstra Punishment ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne tackled Sunday night after the Heat’s 111-108 win in Game 2, Denver’s coach Michael Malone accused his team of a lack of effort.

NBA Finals: Nuggets coach Mike Malone grumbles about team

“Let’s talk staking. I mean, it’s the NBA Finals and we’re talking staking here,” Malone said. “It’s a big concern of mine and you guys thought I was just making up a story after Game 1 when I said we didn’t play well.”

The Nuggets led by 15 points against Miami, but the Heat rallied in the closing stages to win thanks to 23 points from guard Gabe Vincent and help from forward Jimmy Butler and center Bam Adebayo.

“Confusing and disappointing”

“Tonight, the starting lineup at the start of the game, it was 10-2 to Miami,” Malone said. “This isn’t the preseason. This isn’t the regular season. This is the NBA Finals. And that’s really, really confusing and disappointing to me.”

Malone’s tunnel vision — the ABC broadcast made repeated references to the coach saying Denver hadn’t won after Game 1 — has been an advantage for the Nuggets this postseason. He’ll be tested like never before as Denver heads south for Game 3.
