Djokovic wins, disqualification in women’s doubles

Novak Djokovic continues to show no weaknesses. The 36-year-old won the round of 16 against Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas 6: 3, 6: 2, 6: 2 and thus reached the quarterfinals at the French Open for the 17th time. He succeeded in doing this more often than any other professional on the clay court classic. So far he had shared this record with Rafael Nadal. Since 2010 he has consistently reached at least the top eight rounds at the Stade Roland Garros.

Djokovic’s next opponent on the way to his possible 23rd title in a Grand Slam tournament – this would also be the sole record – is the Russian Karen Chatschanov. “Djoker” is still in Paris this year without losing a sentence.

Disputed disqualification

A controversial scene occurred in the women’s doubles competition. The duo of Japan’s Miyu Kato and Indonesia’s Aldila Sutjiadi were disqualified after a ball from Kato’s hit a ball girl. The scene was controversial because Kato hadn’t threw the ball away in frustration, but just wanted to play it to the other side to change serve. In addition, the chair umpire initially wanted to leave it at a warning. Only at the urging of the opponents Sara Sorribes Tormo and Marie Bouzkova was the supervisor brought onto the pitch and the Kato/Sutjiadi duo disqualified.

Alcaraz also looks confident

The top favorite Carlos Alcaraz, who swept the Italian Lorenzo Musetti 6: 3, 6: 2, 6: 2 from the field, did not show any weakness either. The 20-year-old Spaniard and Djokovic are only separated by one win from the dream semi-final against each other.

Switolina continues to play big

The Ukrainian Elina Switolina reached the quarterfinals in her first Grand Slam tournament since the birth of her daughter. In a duel with the Russian Darja Kassatkina, the 28-year-old prevailed 6: 4, 7: 6 (7: 5). Switolina had never gotten further than the top eight in Paris.
