Dominican Pitcher Domingo German Throws Perfect Game for the New York Yankees

CARACAS – A few days ago, we were talking about the “perfect game” of the Venezuelan Felix Hernández who until yesterday had been the last pitcher to succeed in this feat. In fact, the list of pitchers who throw a “perfect game” thanks to the performance on the mound by the Dominican Domingo German stopped at Hernandez. The New York Yankees player became the 24th pitcher in Major League Baseball’s 147-year history to have a perfect game, or retire, strike out with 99 pitches for all 27 batters (9 of these via strikeouts) over the 9 innings, how long is a baseball game.

On the other side of the coin, the team that conceded the perfect game was Athletics Oakland with a final result of 11 – 0.

“It’s so exciting. When you think of something truly unique in baseball, you know that not many people have the opportunity to pitch for a perfect game. To do something like that in my career, you know, it’s something I’ll always remember, to be part of history, so exciting,” the Dominican pitcher said after the game.

The New York Yankees can not only boast of being the franchise with the most championships, 27, but also the one with the most “perfect games”: with four. The list begins in 1956 with Don Larsen, followed by David Wells (1998) and David Wells (1999). Larsen’s gem, for importance, came in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers.

The last time a pitcher achieved this feat was Venezuelan Félix Hernández with the Seattle Mariners jersey in 2012.

Of the 24 pitchers who have managed a perfect game, three of them are Latin Americans. The first was the Nicaraguan Dennis Martínez (in 1991 with the Montreal Expos jersey against the Los Angeles Dodgers), then came the feat of the Venezuelan Félix Hernández (in 2012 with the Mariners jersey against the Tampa Bay Rays). In this list there could have been another pelotero born in the “Little Venice”, Armando Galarraga: on 2 June 2010 due to a referee oversight in the last ball of the game his perfect game was interrupted.

In yesterday’s match, the chief umpire was Edwin Moscoso who made history as the first Venezuelan in a match with this record.
