Elena Rybakina reveals that her health condition worsened after the announcement of her sudden withdrawal from Roland-Garros. Just before the start of her French Open third round match, Elena Rybakina withdrew from the tournament after contracting a virus.
Back at the hotel, her condition worsened and she stayed in her hotel room for a few days before leaving Paris. Last week, Rybakina returned to competition in Berlin, where she was beaten by Donna Vekic in the round of 16.
This week, Rybakina was due to play in the Eastbourne tournament, where she admitted not feeling 100% and ultimately decided not to play. Read more about it in this article.
Rybakina: I stayed cloistered for days
“It was actually difficult. At Roland-Garros, after my withdrawal, I went back to the hotel and it was even worse, so I had to stay in Paris for a few days without leaving my room.
I started my preparation a week later, slowly, and it was difficult because it was a virus. So I think I’m still not 100% physically fit, but it’s getting better little by little and I hope I can play more matches here and feel more comfortable at Wimbledon,” said Rybakina, according to Tennis Up To Date.
After Berlin and Eastbourne, Rybakina should start defending her title at Wimbledon. Rybakina, 24, is taking part in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career as defending champion.
“It’s the first time and it’s a new challenge for me to come as the defending champion and everyone says that I’m a bit of the favorite, so it’s different. But the goals are the same and I’m trying to make the most of the experience gained last year to help me play well this year..”
