The Tyrolean Mathias Posch provided the sixth medal for Austria’s delegation at the European Games in Poland late on Saturday evening. The 23-year-old climber took bronze in the lead final in Tarnow with a score of 38. But that was only certain after an objection from Austria’s team around national coach Kilian Fischhuber, initially Posch was only classified fourth in a close decision.

“What a day, I haven’t experienced a competition like this very often,” said Posch after the result had been confirmed following objections from several sides. In addition, the competitions had been postponed due to the weather. Gold went to France’s Diego Fourbet with a score of 39, and silver to Italy’s Girgio Tomatis with a score of 38+.
It is Austria’s second climbing medal in these title fights, on Friday Lukas Knapp won gold in the Olympic discipline Speed. The lead climb is combined with bouldering in Paris 2024.
Pötzi has to accept fourth place
In the women’s lead final, the 22-year-old Austrian Mattea Pötzi was fourth at 38+, with 39 there would have been bronze. Her compatriot Eva Maria Hammelmüller was seventh (32). It was won by Camille Pouget of France with 43+. “I made several wrong decisions on the route and then flew. Fourth place is the maximum penalty,” said Pötzi, number one in the semifinals.
