Give us back the boxes, Alan Wake 2 fans are asking

The long-awaited second part of Alan Wake arrives on October 17th and is definitely one of the most anticipated games of this year. However, the authors from the Remedy studio made one controversial step: the game will be released only in digital form. There are good intentions behind it, digital distribution will help reduce costs and the game will be able to sell for 60 instead of 70 dollars on consoles. The PC version will even cost only 50 dollars. But many fans would be happy to pay extra for the boxed version as well.

The Remedy studio’s posts on social networks are full of requests for a boxed version of Alan Wake 2. In the long term, the gaming world is most likely moving towards a purely digital future, but physical carriers are still not to be written off. In addition, they have a lot of support from customers who prefer this type of distribution.

The physical vs. digital copy debate has been going on in the video game world for quite some time. On the one hand, it is true that digital distribution is definitely cheaper (although many studios also sell digital copies for a full $70) and in some respects also more convenient for the customer, players still see a physical copy of the game primarily as an insurance that they have the game forever ( or for the lifetime of the carrier) will remain and also that they have the option to sell it again if necessary.

The commotion about the missing physical version has already been noticed by the publisher THQ Nordic, which, for example, provided a physical version of last year’s remastered version of the first part for Remedy. On Twitter, the company specifically requests that the authors at Remedy reconsider:

In the end, it is still possible that someone will persuade the authors of Alan Wake, but for now it is still true that the game will only have a digital distribution.

Alan Wake 2 is otherwise a long-awaited sequel to the game from 2010, which the Finnish studio wanted to make a long time ago, but for many years the copyright was in the hands of Microsoft, which was not interested in the continuation. It wasn’t until 2018 that Remedy got the rights back and could finally start a sequel.

The game is supposed to be even more raw and creepy than its predecessor. You will play as two characters: writer Alan Wake and FBI agent Saga Anderson. Familiar locations from the first part will appear in the game, and the authors will probably connect the worlds more with the last released game, Control.
