Holger Rune celebrated his first match victory on grass on the ATP tour
The starting position for Rune was not easy: The second seeded Dane had to play Maxime Cressy straight away. And the American didn’t disappoint at the beginning with his service volley game, quickly leading 5:2. But Rune came back won the first set in the tiebeak 7:4. In the second set, Cressy was unable to take advantage of several break chances in crucial phases, and again a quick decision was needed. And again Rune had better nerves.
In the end it was 7:6 (4) and 7:6 (3) for Holger Rune, who now meets local hero Ryan Peniston. Rune lost in three sets on grass in Eastbourne last year.
Carlos Alcaraz had big problems. The Spaniard lost the first set against lucky loser Arthur Rinderknech 4:6 and won the second 7:5. At the beginning of the decision, Alcaraz missed two break opportunities, moments later gave up his serve to make it 0:2. But came immediately to the re-break. In the seventh game, Alcaraz missed a break chance, just like in 4: 4.
Not surprisingly, a tiebreak had to decide the outcome of this match. And Carlos Alcaraz got it 7: 3. In the round of 16, the 2022 US Open champion now meets Jiri Lehecka.
