Indonesia Open 2023 most likely to be a farewell tournament for the international level badminton championship with Istora Senayan, Jakarta.
Starting in 2024, the Indonesia Open tournament will be held at the GBK Indoor Multifunction Stadium or called the Indonesia Arena. This is because the stadium is almost complete and will be used for the 2023 basketball world championship.
This was disclosed by the organizing committee for Indonesia Open 2023, Armand Darmadji during a press conference, Monday (12/6).
Armand said that Istora Senayan was no longer able to accommodate the high interest of Indonesian badminton fans.
“We really want to leave sweet memories for all badminton lovers at Istera. Because this is most likely the last Indonesia Open in Istora, before we move to the Indonesia Arena,” said Armand.
However, Armand has not dared to be sure. If Indonesia Arena can be used, this will be confirmed. To be sure, Indonesia Arena will be inaugurated this year.
“For confirmation [pasti] or not, as long as it’s ready for use, we’ll definitely move there because the capacity here is only 6,000 seats out of 7,000,” Armand explained.
“With the new Indonesia Arena, we hope we can move there, because you can see the interest is huge. So we make sure that if the location is available, we will move,” said Armand.
For this year, actually there are still two championships that will take place in Indonesia, namely Indonesia Masters I 2023 and Indonesia Masters II 2023, but these events will take place in Medan and Surabaya.
