Boumkwo, captain of the Belgian team, shot put and hammer thrower, lent herself to replace the injured hurdler at the last moment: she finished last but brought 2 points to the team that wants to avoid Serie B
When you say teamwork. At the European Games in Krakow, the longest and most passionate applause from the Chorzow stadium (where the athletics competitions are held) was won by a Belgian shot put and hammer thrower, Jolien Maliga Boumkwo, with twelve national titles to her credit team captain.
Twenty-nine years old, born in Ghent, Jolien won the support of Polish fans and her teammates not for seventh place in the weight but for a phenomenal performance in the 100m hurdles, the discipline furthest from hers. The Belgian specialist was in fact injured at the last moment and the team had no substitutes: sprinters and jumpers did not make themselves available and so the task was assumed by Jolien who had never jumped an obstacle in her life and doesn’t exactly have the physique of the fast hurdler. In the race won by the Spanish Errandonea in 13 ”22, Jolien reached the finish line jumping every obstacle in accordance with the regulations in 32” 81 and bringing two precious points to her team which is fighting hard not to relegate to the second series. If Belgium were to remain in Serie A on Sunday, it will also be thanks to their throwing heroine transformed into a hurdler.
