Mercato: Marcelino at Olympique de Marseille, it’s official!

For a few days, his arrival had been recorded after the end of the soap opera Gallardo and Lille’s refusal to release Paulo Fonseca. This Friday, OM formalized the appointment of Marcelino García Toral as coach. The 57-year-old Spaniard, close to President Pablo Longoria, will be the successor to Igor Tudor.

In recent years, he has notably won the Copa del Rey against Barcelona in 2019 and qualified the club for the Champions League during his two seasons. In 2021, he won the Spanish Super Cup with Bilbao, the club’s first trophy since 1984. It will be his first experience outside Spain.

“The arrival of Marcelino is part of the desire to give continuity to the club’s project. Our many discussions showed a shared determination and understanding. His expertise and his personality correspond to the requirements of the high level. His experience will also be a considerable asset to strengthen the work undertaken last season, ”said Javier Ribalta, OM’s general director of football in the press release.

“I would like to thank Olympique de Marseille for the confidence granted. Our discussions about the team and the project encouraged reflection to make an informed and thoughtful decision. With all of my staff, we are convinced by the project. I know the responsibility that this mission represents and our commitment will be total,” said Marcelino.
