The wait is over. Navegantes del Magallanes confirmed this Tuesday that Miguel Cairo as his manager for the 2023-2024 season of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP).
Cairo, who has coached the Yankees and White Sox and even saw action in 2022 as Chicago’s interim manager, will have his first experience in Venezuela. He will take the place of Puerto Rican Yadier Molina.
The former Venezuelan big leaguer confessed that he was excited to receive the opportunity to lead his country, in which he saw action as an active player from 1993 to 2003.
“For me it is something incredible to have the opportunity to lead a team with as much history and trajectory as this one… This was the moment to return,” said the pilot, in a statement shared by the electric press department.
“This is a team that always wants to take the championship… That was one of the reasons that motivated me to take on this challenge, because I am also a winner and that is always my goal,” added the Anzoatiguense.
The new president of the shipping companies, Héctor Arias, affirmed that Miguel Cairo is the perfect candidate to lead La Nave, since he already showed what he is capable of when he had to lead the White Sox to replace Tony La Rusa and set a record of 18-16.
“Miguel knows the fundamentals of the game very well and his manual is not limited to the traditional, but also adjusts to the new sabermetric trends. That was evident when he had to take the reins of the White Sox, ”said the executive.
Currently, Miguel Cairo – who played 17 years in the Major Leagues – is the infielders coordinator for the Mets. He is more than ready to start gaining experience as a driver and strongly believes that Caribbean baseball is the perfect challenge.
