Riera eliminated
A few minutes later, after the defeat of her compatriot, Julia Riera took to the court to face Simona Waltert, seed No.15. Against a higher-ranking rival, Argentina found no solutions, and after giving up her serve three times, she lost the first set by a hefty 6-0. The second was more for the Argentine, who, moving the Swiss from side to side, found options and attacked the open spaces. Riera made it 3-1 and 5-4, but she couldn’t hold the lead against a resurgent Waltert. Finally, no differences were drawn in the subsequent games and they led to the tiebreaker. The Swiss accelerated at the most crucial moment and claimed victory in straight sets, by 6- and 7-6(3).
