Puerto Rico says goodbye in the group stage of the Men’s 3×3 World Championship | Basketball

The men’s 3×3 basketball team was eliminated on Thursday, in the group stage, from the World Cup being held in Vienna, Austria.

The team – made up of Antonio Ralat, Leandro Allende, Adrián Ocasio and Luis Cuascut – finished in fourth place in Group C with a 2-2 record and was left with no chance of advancing to the quarterfinals once the sum of points from all their games to break the tie and define the tickets.

The Puerto Ricans finished with 74 points and were about to advance to the round, but were surpassed by Poland with 80, Lithuania with 78 and Belgium with 75 points. Along with Puerto Rico, Israel did not advance either, finishing fifth and last in the group with 70 points. Only the first three advanced.

Puerto Rico beat Israel 20-16 on Thursday, but lost to Belgium 21-18. This last defeat was the one that defined the elimination.

36 years ago, the Allende surname was once again present in Puerto Rican basketball.

This was the fifth time that Puerto Rico has participated in a 3×3 World Cup of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), but the first since the national team maintains scholarship players through the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee (Copur) and the Puerto Rico Basketball Federation (Fbpur) to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The next commitment of the team members will be under the San Juan 3×3 team in the Clermont-Ferrand Challenger, from June 10 to 11, in France. The event will qualify for the 3×3 World Tour stop in Prague, Czech Republic.
