The departure of Karim Benzema came completely out of the blue even for Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti. According to the Italian, nothing indicated that the striker would leave, but that has changed in a very short time.
“His departure was a surprise to everyone,” said Ancelotti on Sunday after the last league game (1-1 against Athletic Club) of the season. The 35-year-old Benzema announced his farewell to ‘De Koninklijke’ a few hours before the game.
“It was a last minute decision. Yesterday he was still with us on the training field and today he told us that he is leaving,” said Ancelotti. “I especially remember that I coached one of the best players and forwards in the world.”
“We are not happy with his departure, but we have to respect his decision,” Ancelotti continued. “Karim has done everything for this club and the right to make this choice. We thank him for what he has done at this club.”
Benzema’s next club still unknown
Benzema played for Real Madrid for fourteen years and won 25 trophies with the club. He won five national titles and won the Champions League for the fifth time in 2022. In addition, he received the Ballon d’Or for the first time last year.
“Real Madrid fans and football enthusiasts around the world have enjoyed his magical and unique football,” said Ancelotti. “He is one of the greatest legends of our club and also a very nice, humble and serious person.”
It is still unknown where Benzema will continue his career. The striker has long been associated with a switch to the Saudi league. Earlier, his former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo also opted for Saudi Arabia.
